Spelling only
Spelling, accents and punctuation. It doesn't touch a single word you chose.
For macOS 26
Select some text — a Teams message, an e-mail, a note — and press ⌃⌥R. Quill shows you how it would read for whoever is going to read it, and ↵ swaps it in right where you were typing.
Free and open source. No account: your text only goes to the model you choose.
hey sam, just fyi the report wont be ready by friday bc were still missing the sales numbers, do u have them or should i ask alex? sorry for the mess lol
Work
Hi Sam, the report won't be ready by Friday because we're still missing the sales numbers. Do you have them, or should I ask Alex? Sorry for the mess.
Gemini 3.8 Flash · Works well
Pick a profile or press ↵. Sample results: the real one depends on the model.
How it works
Where you write: Teams, Mail, Notes, TextEdit… If it can't read the selection directly, it copies it. And on what you can't edit, it leaves the result ready to copy.
The picker appears next to the text, already rewriting with that app's profile or the last one you used. Switch profiles with 1…9 or type what you want.
The text is replaced where it was. Or copy it with ⌘C, or correct it with ⌘E first.
Profiles
How to rewrite depends on who will read it. Quill comes with six profiles, and you can make your own, tune them with examples, try them on saved texts and give each app its own: “in Teams, Work”.
Spelling, accents and punctuation. It doesn't touch a single word you chose.
Clear and cordial: splits run-on sentences, drops filler and leaves technical terms as they are.
For clients, landlords or lawyers: formal register, no slang, and no invented dates or obligations.
Fixes the typos and keeps the slang, the laughter and the emoji. Still sounds like you.
Removes the ums, repetitions and false starts of what you dictated, and adds the punctuation.
Cuts the detours and padding, and keeps every fact, request and nuance.
Type “shorter”, “in Spanish” or “warmer” in the picker and press ↵.
Models
Quill doesn't ship a model and has no server. It uses the one your Mac already has or yours, with your own key, and tells you what each one does well before you choose it.
On your Mac, if it has it: free and private, for short texts.
Hundreds of models from many vendors with a single key.
Direct, with your API key.
Anything OpenAI-compatible, such as Ollama or LM Studio on your network.
Each model carries a label per profile, taken from a bench of real cases anyone can run again. Today, Gemini 3.8 Flash works well on every built-in profile; Apple's model doesn't yet.
Why Quill
Before you can apply a result, Quill checks it: names, numbers, links and emoji must still be there, and it flags anything your text didn't say — a figure, a date, a greeting, a sign-off. A flagged result tells you why, and it is never applied without you seeing it.
Privacy
Quill has no server, no account and no telemetry.
And only when you ask for a rewrite. The first time text goes to a cloud provider, Quill tells you who will receive it before sending anything.
Your API keys are stored in the macOS Keychain. Release builds write none of your text to any log.
Password fields are left alone: Quill never reads them.
With the keyboard
Everything works with keys, and everything with the pointer too. The shortcut can be changed.
Also from the contextual menu: Services › Rewrite with Quill.
Install
Download Quill, open the DMG and drag Quill onto Applications.
Open it. A short walkthrough asks for the Accessibility permission, which is what lets it read the selection and replace it, and helps you choose the model.
Select text in any app and press ⌃⌥R.
No account, no subscription, no server. With your Mac's own model, or with yours.
It's free and it'll stay that way. If it saves you time, you can leave a tip.
